Once again, The Fifth Wall was transferred to an exhibition space, and this time in Berlin at silent green. Curators Merle Kröger and Mareike Bernien constructed a screening and discussion platform around five thematic stations: Decolonisation, Migration and Racism in the FRG, Feminist Perspectives, Politics in India, and Culture in Pictures. The studio cinema of silent green became a sixth space, where selected news items provided a snapshot and commented overview of the topics covered by Sundaram during her time at NDR.

The thematic stations served to raise questions about migration, gender relations, and post-colonial structures, among others, and linked them to current debates on documentary film, journalistic ethics and the medium of television. A small part of German television history thus became visible from both inside and outside through Navina Sundaram's unique gaze. The walk-in exhibition’s accompanying programme of events, which included a symposium, lectures, discussions and film screenings, became a real space for encounters and exchange, research and collective thinking, enabling visitors to immerse themselves in the politically committed and courageous work of journalist Navina Sundaram.

Exhibition Opening
4th July, 7pm, Betonhalle

The evening began with a warm welcome from silent green and an introduction to the exhibition and digital archive by the curators. As a tribute to Navina Sundaram, there was a performative reading by violinist Kathy Nierenz and visual artist Bärbel Rothhaar, who have developed a common language through music, installations and live painting on overhead projectors. Urmila Goel then invited one of the six women she had interviewed in 2023, who was named after Navina, to talk about the lasting impact Navina Sundaram has had on her life.

A selection of photographs from the exhibition.
